Home Inspection, LLC

Standards of Practice

Michigan Regulation:

The home inspection industry is not currently regulated in Michigan. There is legislation in the works that will change that, but, for the time being, most reputable home inspectors will adhere to the standards of practice and the code of ethics of one of two organizations. They are: ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) or NAHI (National Association of Home Inspectors).

ASHI & NAHI Organizations:

ASHI was founded in 1976, and NAHI was founded in 1987. Both are leaders in the industry, and both are nationally recognized as benchmarks for professional home inspectors. The standards and ethics of ASHI & NAHI are quite similar, and the differences that do exist between them do not appear to be of major consequence. Somme inspectors belong to both associations, but the overlap is large enough that most inspectors belong to just one. You can view the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for each organization at their respective web sites:

NAHI—www.nahi.org

Firm Foundation:

Our inspections are conducted according to the NAHI standards. This is by choice, and not of necessity. We feel that NAHI is a better fit for Firm Foundation.  This is not a negative statement against ASHI; it is simply a judgment about which organization’s structure is the best match to the objectives and needs of Firm Foundation Home Inspection, LLC. For peace of mind, be assured that our inspections meet or exceed the standards of BOTH organizations; but, for company policy and reporting purposes, NAHI is the standard of record.
